Talented care home residents at Cherry Wood Grange have had their artistic skills celebrated in a unique exhibition, with praise from the town’s mayor who was guest of honour.

Talented care home residents at Cherry Wood Grange have had their artistic skills celebrated in a unique exhibition, with praise from the town’s mayor who was guest of honour.

The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Linda Mascot, admired the exhibition of paintings, collages and crafts by residents, held in the bistro area of the home, declaring their work “simply exceptional!”

The display encapsulated the essence of art therapy promoting self-expression and emotional well-being among those at the award-winning 66-bed home.

From the calming colours of far-off landscapes to the residents’ takes on modern classics including Picasso’s ‘Le Chien’ nothing was off limits.

Residents at the home have been building on their skills and exploring their artistic talents in their weekly art class with teacher Jenny.

Art classes are part of an exciting activities schedule that lean into the home’s caring environment. Cherry Wood Grange specialise in dementia and palliative care and offer nursing, dementia, residential, respite and end of life care.

The home’s manager Sue Smith expressed the profound impact of art therapy on the residents, she said: “Art has been a source of immense joy and self-discovery for our residents. It has allowed them to express themselves in ways that words sometimes cannot. We are incredibly proud of their achievements, and this exhibition is a testament to their artistic journey.”

The weekly art classes have been made possible through the dedication of a team of carers who have nurtured the creativity of the residents. It has been a therapeutic outlet for many, fostering a sense of purpose and accomplishment among the artists.

The exhibition provided a unique opportunity for residents to share their work with their friends, family, and local community and the appearance from the Mayor of Chelmsford made the occasion extra special.

Resident Kathy Sousta, 83, is a regular at the art classes and said she was thrilled to see her painting on display. She even posed for a picture with manager Sue and Councillor Linda. Kathy said: “I felt delighted to see all of our artwork on display – everyone was excited to see how their work was received and it was such a high to see so many admiring our work.”

The Mayor of Chelmsford was overwhelmed with the residents’ artwork declaring it “simply exceptional”.
