Brian’s Story: Living Well with Dementia

Introducing the newest member of our Lifestyles Team

Brian (83) has early stage dementia. Since retiring from a demanding job in finance, he enjoyed an active social life for many years. When his memory loss started to impact on his independence and overall wellbeing, Brian decided the time was right time to move into residential care. Brian’s son Neil agrees that this was the best decision they could have made.

“Dad is happy and safe at Cherry Wood Grange. To me that’s worth everything.”

Anna Allen, Home Manager comments:

“As part of our comprehensive care planning process we aim to understand each and every resident’s needs – including their social needs and aspirations. We recognised that Brian was naturally sociable and enjoyed sharing his love of music with other residents. When asked if he wanted to run a weekly music session, he jumped at the chance to dig out his old records.

Since then he’s taken on more and more ‘jobs’, from delivering newspapers to organising residents’ meetings. I’m delighted to announce that we have made Brian an ‘honourary’ member of the Lifestyles team.”

Cydney, Copping, Lifestyle Co-ordinator adds:

“Brian has thrived with his new-found responsibilities. In fact, he is now so busy we’ve given him a notebook and diary to help him stay on top of everything. It’s lovely seeing him so happy.’

Always the first one to get involved and encourage other residents to participate in activities, Brian has turned into Cherry Wood Grange’s Facebook star!

“I love the company of the team members and the residents. I enjoy making others feel good, and in the end that is what life is all about.”
